I love TJ Klune. He rips out your heart but then puts it back and you can’t stop reading. You love the characters and root for them. I thought this would be an automatic 5 star!

I loved all the characters and I did root for everyone! It was a little uncomfortable for me possibly because it was YA and everyone was family but there were some romantic overtones. Everyone was just too young and maybe too much of an age gap for me. There’s definitely trigger warnings that probably should have been noted in the beginning of the book.

But I’ve been told the other books are way way better. I bet they will have 5 stars. We shall see!

I certainly enjoyed parts of this book more than others. It feels very indulgent in ways I didn’t mind, but some people may find it cringey. Deeply heartfelt and angsty, while also a little repetitive at times. It does feel like the repetition is a choice based on the narration style, but repetitive nonetheless. The book could have been shorter based on the simplicity of the plot, but there were many good character interactions that bulked it out, and I enjoyed seeing how all the characters’ intimacy unfolded in that way. Character conversations and narrator introspection is the focus, rather than external worldbuilding.

I am familiar with Klune’s other works, and this absolutely feels like something he wrote prior to finding his author’s voice and style. But honestly, I came here for indulgent, angsty, queer werewolves and I was definitely not disappointed.

I have never in my life read a book that feels so much like fanfiction. There's a certain type of ridiculousness that is usually reserved for AO3 that I found in abundance her, and I think for many that may be a deal breaker; however, with that absurdity comes the readability also typical of that platform, which for me sort of balanced things out. There is definitely some problematic stuff here (particularly regarding the age gap in the romance), but if you're able to get past that and turn your brain off a little, this is a really fun time.

I have a hard time summarising the experience I had with this book. I guess that's what a three star experience is: It was fine but not remarkable.
It was hard getting into this world. I hadn't read such a werewolf heavy story before and it was a struggle at first. I grew more into it as I went though. I can see how you would get attached to this series. The found family in this is strong with interesting characters that give space for exploring.
What I struggled with most was the age gap. For most of this book the gap is icky and weird, because Joe is so young. The fact that they met as kids just doesn't sit right with me. The possessiveness of their relationship also wasn't my taste. It was just too much. This book really focuses on their relationship, so that's a big chunk of book that I have uneasy feelings about.
Will I read more? I'm not sure to be honest. While curious I also think there are other books I would rather spend my time on.
