The first (chronologically) of the Jack Ryan books, Patriot Games sets up the origin story of Jack Ryan, and how he went from being a history professor at the Naval Academy to a CIA analyst. The book had done well when originally released in 1987 that it went on to be adapted into a movie starring Harrison Ford, Samuel L Jackson and James Earl Jones.

Clancy is meticulous in his details, and goes in depth even for minor characters to describe their thoughts and convictions and in the end what makes them think. The book follows the actions of Jack saving the Prince and Princess of Wales, and his subsequent targeting by the ULA, a group of Irish terrorists who follow Ryan back to America and set up the first incident of foreign terrorism on American soil. As Ryan slowly joins the CIA and becomes embroiled in the plot of the ULA, we see Clancy weave an impressive narrative that has the reader at the edge of their seat, also playing well into the prejudices and psyche of characters based on their status, ethnicity, race and gender.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I cannot wait to deep dive into the Jack Ryan books!
