Why do twin sister stories always make me feel so happy? Maybe it’s the fact that I always wanted a twin growing up. The Parent Trap and Escape from Witch Mountain really made me desperate for that Disney magic in my life too. I have two incredible sisters, so that is as close as I’ll ever get, but maybe my mom had twins and we’re separated at birth. I’ll find out sometime in my life…. Oh! And maybe I’ll get Magic too?

Rose was raised to be queen, while her twin sister, Wren (that she didn’t knew existed), was raised by witches. They were separated at after their parents were brutally murdered. Rose was told that the witches had been her family’s ultimate downfall, while Wren was taught the truth. Now one sister has been kidnapped and the other is pretending to be her, so that she can get the crown and release the witches from this horrible hold the monarchy has on them.

My favorite part of this book was definitely all of the side characters. Celeste is Rose’s best friend and you can tell that if Wren hadn’t been there to take her sister’s crown, then they’d end up really close too. She’s hilarious, she brings life to a room, and she’s queer. She’s the me of the book!

This book was nice since the fantasy world wasn't too difficult to follow and the main characters were interesting enough. The main characters are twin sisters so the book had dual POV's alternating between them which I liked. The abilities of witches were cool too. But the main characters lacked a bit of depth and were one dimensional. The first half of the book was quite slow but then picked up after like 60%. Also it was quite unbelievable for me that the main characters were supposed to be almost 18 year olds, it felt like they were at least 20.
I would have enjoyed the book way more when I was in my teens but overall it was an enjoyable book and I will continue with this series.

Honestly, I hated this. Not for any particular reason but just for how horrendously bored I was and how unlikely every single thing that happened was. First of all, I don't know how you're supposed to ever, ever bond to Rose. She's a pampered princess who believes an entire people are evil because a guy who's enjoying wearing her crown says so, so my respect for her is already hovering around 0 at the start. Then she gets her world expanded and yet still engages with everyone in a very 'you can't talk to me like that, I'm a princess,' way and the fact that any of the witches like her, or that Shen likes this girl who has no clue how the world works and doesn't particularly care to learn..... nah, doesn't track at all. She's an idiot and throughout she is an idiot. Even when she believes all witches aren't evil and is actively trying to help, she's still like: well, I'm a princess, so it'll be fixed because I say so. No, girl, you're dumb and I hate you and I don't know how you ever get past that with her? Then Wren is still interested in a soldier who treated her like garbage and left her for dead at the end. Neat? Also the fact that they think 'exposing' Rathborne will fix anything - like I'm sorry, people can't agree on what a fact is anymore so you expect that to have any effect at all when everyone can just go: well, Wren is a witch and she's addled your mind? How is that your only plan? It was just bad, it was a lot of YA cliches (everyone needs to be paired up especially!) and a lot of really crappy characters that I'm clearly supposed to like but I have no idea why based on, y'know, their actions.

This book was good and the plot was unique but I feel like it could have been more. The authors needed to spend time on more things. Especially the romance, the romance needed more time to be smooth and believable. Like Wren and Tor were ok, but Rose and Shen Lo needed more work.
