A very thorough and well-written story of the siege of Vicksburg. I appreciate how Shaara can capture the whole of the history story and still weave in a fictional narrative in too, without making it dry or over-the-top. The book was very long, and I think it was a little drawn out, but it did an excellent job at capturing the before, during, and aftermath of the siege.

Another great book by Shaara, I really enjoyed rereading this one. Again, I found the Bauer character to be uncompelling and the new civilian character didn't grab my attention either. But Shaara's characterization of Grant, Sherman and Pemberton were very good and make the book an overall enjoyable experience for me.

Good, but not as compelling or interesting of a read as most of the other Jeff Shaara books.

This isn't quite as good as some of Shaara's other books, but it's still a great journey into the world of Civil War history, letting readers into the lives and minds of the people who lived and fought at Vicksburg. I appreciated that one of the viewpoints that of a woman, Lucy Spence, as I haven't seen that in Shaara's other Civil War novels.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I really enjoyed this book. Shaara is already living under the shadow that is his father, but he is a writer and a historian in his own right. I will confess, I was drawn to this book because of his surname, but I was very pleased with his research and writing style.

The Siege of Vicksburg is largely overshadowed by Gettysburg, but this battle of the Civil War was equally as important for Union victory. Shaara tells this lesser-known story beautifully, weaving in multiple narratives.

This book is a wonderful introduction for people who want to get their feet wet about the Western Theater of the Civil War, but aren't quite ready to break into a scholarly work.
