I found myself more settled into this book than the earlier books in this series: Cassidy and Julia are in a good place in their relationship. I also think it helped me that this one focused more tightly on Cassidy (who I can identify more with) and less on Julia (whose story was more important to book 2 especially).
Cassidy has to adjust to her new position and we get to see her working her first cold case with the team, as well as dealing with the aftermath of her Marine life. Julia has some settling in to do as well, but that is much less emotional than her conflicts in book 2.
There were times when this almost felt like a procedural, where we got lots of focus on the case Cassidy was investigating, but… all of it worked for me. And… looking forward to book 4…
