I love Meg Cabot but I don't really read mysteries, so idk if this one was really for me. I liked the character of Heather enough to pick up the next one, though. Would be good for a school - some very PG romance (mentions of sex), drama and crime, and celebrity.

Very fun, different book. A good amount of unexpected twists, and very body positive.

Cute mystery/suspense novel. Yes, Heather is a little cliché. Yes, the book screams mid-aughts/early 2010s. Overlook that, and skip the godawful lyrics that begin each chapter, and this is an enjoyable read.

This book is very clearly a product of its time. It was published in 2005, and the way  that body image and weight is discussed throughout just screams early aughts. I appreciate the intended message of the book: size doesn’t matter. However, to the main character, it DOES seem to matter. Strangers are consistently commenting on the protagonist’s weight (she is a size 12, spoiler alert), and the comments don’t even seem like they’d happen naturally. Additionally, the protagonist’s internal discussion of weight is just kind of icky? Like, she blames being a size 12 on her inability to resist eating a snack and the fact that she only bathes because she’s too lazy to stand up and shower (which is such a weird character trait to include??). Basically, the main character’s main quirks are used to shame her for being a size 12, and it makes it seem like gaining weight and enjoying food is the worst thing possible (even though the mantra of the book is supposed to be the opposite).

That being said, I did enjoy the murder mystery aspect of this book a lot!! It is actually one of the main reasons I decided to buy a used copy of this book. I don’t think that it was necessarily the best murder mystery ever written, but it certainly was crazy. I do think that the protagonist was a little too horny for someone who has just witnessed two murders. Like, thirty minutes after seeing a murder, she is describing a man’s ass in detail. It’s just a weird flex to be turned on by murder is all.

I love Meg Cabot, but she was absolutely wild for this one .

I remember loving this book years ago when I first read it. It didn’t age well. Now, I’m a bit put off my the focus on peoples weight. I know the title is Size 12 Isn’t Fat, but the belief that fat is bad and thin is the only acceptable thing gets tiresome. Other than that, a fun quick read.
