Overview: Everyone knows I love Dexter. The TV series is one of my favourite series (and part of my inspiration for my book My Dark Self) so I feel bad that I don't love the books. I have a sort of love/hate relationship with the books. I watched the show first and because I loved it so much I was expecting to love the books, but this is the 3rd Dexter book in the series (there are 7 in total) and unfortunately they don't always hit the spot. This one had a good premise and I love delving into Dexter's dark mind, but the overall plot was just...weird.

Good points: Dexter. He is the best bit about the books and always will be. His dry sense of humour. His lack of emotion, but his ability to hold down a functional relationship with his fiancee and her two kids (who are creepy weirdos too).

Not so good points: Every other character (apart from Dexter) is soooo one-dimensional. His sister, Debs, is the most pointless character and has little to no development at all. The ending of this book made no sense...when it starting talking about gods and weird bull heads I was a bit like...huh?

If you enjoyed the TV series then I'd recommend these books. If you haven't read about Dexter yet then give the first book a go (Darkly Dreaming Dexter) and see how you get on...I will be reading the whole series, but I'm certainly not itching to pick up the next one straight away.

Not a big fan of the Dark Passenger being related to something separate from Dexter. This demon, god, possession, dark shadow thing was too much. BUT I'm still digging the novel, Astor and Cody are more complex than from the show, and I like their development down Harry's Path.

I couldn't begin to tell you why this book took me so long to get through. Maybe it was my schedule, maybe it was an inherent disinterest in the start of the book, that carried into my mood for finishing it. Nonetheless, I found this go-around with Dexter and his demons utterly uninspiring and full of out there fancy, even for me.

The book spends a lot of time waxing poetic about what Dexter's life will be like if he cannot reunite with his Dark Passenger, the internal spirit (for lack of a better term) that helps guide him through his most grizzly night excursions. The Passenger goes into hiding under threat during a string of new homicides, which amounts to truly nothing. The victims are left with their heads chopped off, which serves as a metaphor for how faceless these secondary characters come off in this book.

Lindsay's past works in the series have helped to produce some truly interesting characters, but in this one the lot of them feel like caricatures. Usually vibrant and complex folks like Deb and Rita are reduced to what feels like shells of their former selves. The "villains" are two dimensional husks of what they could be, if we didn't have to have another solid 3 paragraphs on how Dexter *feels* about the same thing he's been *feeling* for the majority of the novel.

I'm invested into the series through at least the next three books (thank you, great yard sale deals), so I hope this is just a hiccup in a series I've so far enjoyed.

I think I am done with Dexter for a while.
