This is a fun little series, and I’m really enjoying the steampunk elements. I think there’s only one book left in the series, and it’s going on my list.

*I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Waistcoats & Weaponry was a fantastic read, and I’ve come to expect nothing less from Gail Carriger. In this book we have Picklemen! Werewolves! Vampire Plots! Mechanicals with issues!

I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end, Sophronia was in top form, as was her supporting cast. This book really starts to see Sophronia come into her own, and have to make decisions about where her intelligencer skills are going to be used. It was wonderful to read Sophronia’s battle back and forth with the two sides. Picklemen vs The Supernatural World. Having read herParasol Protectorate series, I can say that I am safely on the side of the supernatural. However, I like that Sophronia doesn’t allow herself to make the easy choice, she did indeed think about both sides and it was until a major event that she made her decision.

Humor and wit always abound in a Gail Carriger novel, and this one was no different. However, this series is finally moving to a little bit of a darker place as Sophronia gets older and encounters boys. I will admit that I felt a little let down by Felix Mersey in this installment. I had such high expectations for him, and felt that he really matched Sophronia in wit and temperament, but in this installment he proves sadly lacking. Soap was an immense surprise, as he finally steps forward and becomes more aggressive in his feelings. However, there are definitely challenges to be faced with Soap, even as he seems like the perfect counterpart to Sophronia. I do hope that their relationship does end up progressing, at least for a little while. It was nice to see Soap and Felix inhabiting the same space, it was like a volley back and forth while they fought for Sophronia’s attention.

I really liked how this book dealt with some of the bigger topics that Sophronia had been avoiding up until now, and the ending definitely took a darker and sadder turn than I expected. However, it was a nice change of pace from the previous two books which were definitely lighter. This book was still just as fun as the previous two installments, and of course one of my favorite things is to see character growth which this novel has in spades. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars. Gail Carriger crafted a wonderful book out of her superb writing, and delightful characters

This ended up being a really fast read. I don't feel like all that much actually happened though.

2 stars - one extra star for having read it on a cruise whilst drunk.

the perfect fluffy book for a cruise. absolutely no thinking involved, didn't need to remember too much of the plot of the last book, or perhaps i didn't care? read under the caribbean sky with mango daquiris in hand.

*sob*

i miss it.
