The dark, atmospheric story kept me hooked! The prose is captivating and lush, and I especially enjoyed the poetic epigraphs! The magic system is fascinating, the world-building is good, and there's a bit of romance and a healthy dose of action. I liked Elspeth's relationship (and banter!) with the 500-year-old monster, called Nightmare, residing in her mind.

The only con is that the story ends on a cliffhanger, and I wasn't emotionally ready, haha. Can't wait for the next book!

4 stars!!

this book roped me in from the start and didn't let me go! this read really well, I powered through it and had fun. I'm looking forward to the sequel and seeing how this story develops. The romance in here works really well and Elsbeth is a character with a really interesting POV and head to be inside, I hope the multi POV shift for the second book serves the story and doesn't detriment it. Cool magic and lore, cool gothic vibes. This is also like if Lakesedge was better and for adults. I really feel invested even though I only spent a day with these characters and this story, Rachel Gillig slayed this.
