The writing is a bit cringy, it looks like the author doesn't really know how to write teenagers, but the overall story is very good.

The Writing Style Just Didn't Sit Well With Me. I Don't Know What It Was, But I Just Couldn't Get Past The First Few Pages.

Alice, Noah, Isabelle, Hogan, and Xander all live drastically different lives with drastically different mindsets, yet during this terrifying lockdown together, they find out they have a lot more in common than they realized.

This book was so unique in it's different writing styles--it's told through journal entires, regular POV, schedules, text messages, etc. There's a depth to these characters that I am surprised to have found, considering this novel is told over the span of sixty minutes. I love how these characters had negative traits, and even introducing their depth and backstories didn't erase those traits (yes, Izzy is conceited and full of herself, and she wants more out of life. see? these things don't have to be mutually exclusive with a "but" waiting to happen!).

Overall this was a quick and easy read, only two days, and contained some great characters that I know I will be thinking about for a while. The shooter plot has been done again and again, but Pignat creates a novel that shows you more about the characters she has created in this time of need instead of focusing on the aftermath of a school shooting. I was pleasantly surprised with this novel!

B-

It was a quick, mostly enjoyable if somewhat predictable read. I didn’t really find the different viewpoint characters had particularly different voices. Hogan sounded like Alice and I sometimes had to go back to the beginning of the chapter to see who the viewpoint character was supposed to be. I wasn’t fond of the portrayal of Noah, a character with autism. It really came off as stereotype-y to me. There was a fair bit of suspension of disbelief needed to fully enjoy the novel
SpoilerJust one example: it took an inordinate amount of time for this group of intelligent 18 year olds to figure out why a school shooter might want a few hundred ball bearings
and the fact that there is an actual shooter on the loose in the school seems almost an afterthought to the kids trapped in the washroom. The comparison to The Breakfast Club is apt BUT not organic. This is a book that intentionally tried to recreate The Breakfast Club. Whether you think that’s a good thing or a bad thing will probably determine whether you like this book or hate it.

this book is a page turner, but it wasn't from suspense it was from the characters. there are many lessons throughout this book, especially the main one being how different the characters are from each other but finding out how similar they are. i loved the characters of this book so much and how we got each of their perspectives. i loved even more how it showed such unlike people becoming friends.

AMAZING!! SIMPLY AMAZING!!! I freakin loved this book!!! I practically read it through one sitting!!! All the characters were relatable and this book really showed how you can't know a book by its cover. Totally realistic and totally beautiful, this book will steal hearts.
