I absolutely loved this collection of stories! Each story was beautifully written with characters that I felt for and connected with, which can be difficult to accomplish with short stories. All of the stories were so varied that they kept the entire book interesting: From the subject matter, to the period in which the story was set, and the story length. All the stories had a cohesive brooding, dirty, horrific tone that perfectly matched the cover. The book also made me really want to visit Homboldt County California. The stories make connections to the local flora, fauna, culture, history, and landmarks that add depth to the tone and meaning of the stories.

I believe this is the first collected works I have ever given a full five stars to, as there are usually stories that leave me wanting. Not the case here. Every story had a perfect story arch in my opinion, and it's hard to pick a favorite from the bunch. Go buy it now.
