It’s SPOOPY #BOOK TIME.  I just read ”The Scapegracers” by H.A. Clarke.  Think “The Craft,” but if they’d stayed friends and were GAAAAAAAAAY.  (ETA: Okay, MOAR gay)  Also, there are witch hunters.  It’s full of high school drama and action and sass.  It’s busy and messy and ridiculous and very fun.  You definitely need to be in that kind of mood to read it, but if you are, it’s quality Halloween candy.

Cute.  I'm on a women furiously loving women Binge. Recommend sawkill girls for any who enjoyed this plot. Very different writing style though

It took me a long time to get through this because I do a lot of my reading as I'm going to bed, and I didn't want to read this tired. Fucking phenomenal. Only bitch is the open ending.

Cute but I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series.

Sideways is an outcast, a lesbian and a witch. Only one of those things gets her new friends, though. After a particularly eventful magic session at a party, Sideways finds herself wrapped up in friends, foes, and around the finger of a cute girl. Can they solve the mystery together and form their own coven?

The most popular girls at school ask outcast lesbian witch Sideways to make some magic at their party. They’re impressed by what they see, and Sideways suddenly finds herself with a coven and—incredibly—new best friends.

Wow, I just LOVED this. Can I do better than “outcast lesbian witch” to sell this book for you? Probably not. But let’s try.Following openly gay, openly witchy Sideways was pure wish fulfillment for high school me who was in the closet and also desperately wanted to be a witch. There are curses for handsy boys. There are culty witch hunters. There are Halloween parties. There are levitating cheerleaders. There are gay dads running a curiosity shop. Really truly, I love Sideways and her friends, and I love their tender, messy, sharp relationships with each other. If you’ve ever been a teenage girl, you know that—for better or worse—there is nothing on this earth like teenage girl friendship, and this book embodies that so completely. The Scapegracers gives all the power to teenage girls, and I love, love, love it.

This was such a satisfying beginning of a trilogy, I was suprised to learn this was a debut novel it is so great.

Sideways (because as she herself says she is anything but straight) this dialog highlights the character of Sideways a teenage witch and lesbian who always saw herself on the outer until Daisy, Jing, and Yates most popular girls in school offer her $40 for a little magic at their Halloween party that's result aren't only memorably spooky but to Sideways’ utter bewilderment, the triumvirate fiercely claims her, and she’s now a member of the most badass girl clique. Daisy, Jing, and Yates    are each brilliant creations worthy of their own tales and not another mean girl clique. Readers will root for, this cunning, crass, and fiercely caring coven.

This is a story of the fierce intensity of young adult friendships, the swirl of emotions which is so aptly captured with magic. I also really enjoyed how the story skirts around traditional structures, opting instead for a distinctly queer ebb and flow; rather than rising to a single climax, the plot moves in waves, each bigger but no less important or enjoyable than the last.

Brilliant story, brilliant characters and interesting mysteries, the magic shop, the hidden antagonist/woman of desire, a spell book/freed devil all driving forward to the next book which I can't wait to read in the trilogy.
