for the longest time, i assumed this was a standalone and was so confused when i got to the final chapter and so much was still unresolved. this book was very good at representing teenage girls but i am not one and found it very frustrating to listen to Sidway's internal monologue and self-esteem/worth/doubts struggles. the book was also overly descriptive at some parts and then jumped quickly to a different point. there were also a few instances of continuity errors, where things didn't make sense. i also found some of the descriptions of appearances a bit ick, like how her teeth were unclean, no one wants to read that. finally, while it was nice to see school work/class being an actual part of the plot, it came so randomly into the final third of the book, i was just like why are we here?

The relationships between everyone in this book felt so real and palpable. I read it all in one day and can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. The magic in this is written beautifully and is really unique.
