This is a great book for all ages, it’s hopefully, inspiring, sad, maddening and above all honest!

Heartwrenching, relatable, beautiful. I wish this book existed when I was a teen! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter addresses teen depression in the most real, rawest way. The story is a relatable coming-of-age tale dealing with finding who you are and what it's like when you have that first "eureka" moment that your parents are also humans dealing with their own baggage.

The protagonist Julia always felt like the black sheep in her conservative family, but even more so after the death of her "perfect" sister. There is an element of mystery surrounding her sister's life comes to a surprising conclusion, and the topics of teen friendship and first love are also touched upon and wonderfully executed. Can't recommend this book enough!

I wanted to check this out because it was very popular at the bookstore I work at and I wanted to see if it was worth the hype. I think it definitely passes and I will absolutely continue to recommend it, and I’m happy that I know a bit more about what’s in it. I’m giving it four stars purely to reflect my personal enjoyment—I don’t get as much out of young adult books as I used to and as I know a young adult would. I think Julia is a great main character for young adults to read and many will see themselves reflected in her, the good and the bad. I think this novel has a lot of value both for readers whose life experiences are similar to Julia seeing themselves as the main character of a book but also for readers whose experiences are very different to Julia to be exposed to something they may not have been before.
