I was pretty excited for a sapphic novel by this author, but to be honest, I wasn't sold on the romance. The main characters are likeable and unique, I'm just not sure they make sense together. The plot was interesting, but this book felt like two novels squished together. I think it would've been better split up into two. It was still a fun and slightly creepy read, just like the first in the series. I highly recommend listening rather than reading this one. The slang would've been a nightmare without the talented VA they got for the audiobook.

It's a bummer the romance fell flat for me because the characters were well developed. It almost makes me feel like the author wasn't entirely comfortable writing a gay couple. The first book had quite a bit of explicit material, but this one has zero spice. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just felt odd to me when compared to the first in the series. Overall, I would read more from this series because I enjoy the characters and atmospheric plots. They're great autumn reads.

The plot and characters are entertaining but I found the book difficult to get through at times because of how over written the prose was. Waggoner tries too hard to make up dialects which render the writing confusing and clunky. Still, a great WLW romance in a magical reimagining of Britain.

What a wonderfully fun book.

Set in a faux-Victorian secondary world, this book has a lot going on for such a face paced story. The POV character, Delly Wells, starts the story just scrambling to stay housed, and completely hopeless. Her life has become a mosaic of drunkenness, scams, and one night stands trying to keep her head above water and make life halfway tolerable while she does so.

One run in with the police and a bit of quick thinking later, and Delly's managed to con herself into a bodyguard job on the strength of her skills as a fire witch. Things quickly escalate and complicate from there. There is a murder plot, bounty hunting, a love con, undead mice, and more. By the end of book, a great many things (and people!) have changed, and more than a few did not go the way Delly Wells thought they would.

Highly recommended.
