A good thriller with some surprisingly well-developed characters. The protagonist's origin story in the first act is very well done and in some ways more compelling than the action that follows. The plot goes in a very strange direction with a twist about halfway through that is truly ridiculous. Overall there was lots to like here for my first Koontz novel.

The first time the lightning strikes Laura Shane is born...

The second time it strikes the terror starts... though a mysterious stranger saves eight-year-old Laura from the perverted and deadly intentions of a drug-crazed robber. Throughout her childhood she is plagued by ever more terrifying troubles, and with increasing courage she finds the strength to prevail - even without the intervention of her strange guardian. But, despite her success as a novelist and her happy family life, Laura cannot shake the certainty that powerful and malignant forces are controlling her destiny.

This is the first book I have read by Dean Koontz and it definitely will not be my last.

I must admit that I've always heard very mixed opinions regarding Koontz's work, especially some of his newer titles, so I was a bit reluctant to start this book. I picked it up mainly because I needed a fun, easy read to break my reading slump.

The plot concerns time travel, and borrows quite a lot from the Terminator, but still has a good story. My only complaint is that some of the characters, even if I cared a lot about them, were very clichéd and stock-ish (I know this isn't a word, I apologize).

I also felt that this book could have been fleshed out a lot more, which could have resulted in more character development and possibly would have prevented some of the characters from becoming so clichéd.

4 stars.

I listen to audiobooks most of the time. I've listened to hundreds. This one BLEW THE REST AWAY. The narrator was able to perfectly create the voices for women, German men, English men, children, you name it and he was SPOT ON. Even phone calls were made to sound like phone calls. The plot was amazing and you fall in love with almost all the characters. I cannot rate this highly enough but if you read it and don't listen to it, you have missed one of the best treasures in the world. Sounds corny but it really was that good!!!
