I absolutely loved this one. Character, story, imagery. Could get enough.

I enjoyed the first half more than second, found it quite slow in places but I did enjoy the writing and story overall. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.

i read this for a book club - to begin with i wasn't sure what to make of it, but it's done the miraculous and pulled me out of a reading slump!

it's such a heartwrenching tale, delving into history i'm not familiar with and approaches it with so much compassion. i feel so much for all the characters in this story - and that it's based in history is like another punch in the gut. i did cry by the end. but there is also such a strong sense of hope and resilience - and the sights, tastes, and smells it provides as you read are also powerful.

it's a book i wouldn't have naturally gravitated to (i don't read a whole lot of more recent history based historical books, usually pre-1900s for me haha) - but i am so so glad i did pick it up. thank you book wanderers for choosing it as may's read!

I went back and forth on 4-5 stars on this. I wish I could give it 4.5.
This story was heart breaking, eye opening and tragically beautiful.
I’ll write a bigger update once I digest it more but for now... I just want to cradle the memory of Meilin in my arms and feel all the emotions she evoked through this journey. What a beautiful introduction into a culture I shamefully know little about.
