Absolutely great book. I think I got this for free or real cheap awhile ago and never got around to reading it. I finally did and man am I glad. Has to be one of the best books Ive read this year.

This omnibus started at 5 stars, but as the series went along the prose became less lyrical and the imaginative ideas ran out. I think it really lost steam when the Earth died. There were entire pages in the last third of the book that were repetitive and dull. If this had been the actual three books, I probably would have loved the first, liked the second, and been disappointed in the third.

Having said that, the parts that were good were great. I loved the voice of the Earth and the Hawk. I was furious when the Farrows met their end, and more furious that Declan didn't bring his heritage back to life. There were parts that were creepy and tense. I loved the wards and their whispering malice. The world-building and history were sound and interesting.

I tried; I really, really tired. The story started out well enough and the first 100 or so pages were rather engaging and then something happened; it’s almost like a different author wrote the second and third installments and they were not as good as the first installment. There simply has to be a better way to execute exposition other than pages and pages and pages and pages of bloated prose that detract from the plot. There is a good story buried in the bloat, it just needs to be fished out. This story would have benefited from tighter editing.
