I really, really loved and connected with this book, and I look forward to exploring that deeper at book club. A five-star book that’s only getting four because I’m still unsure of how I feel about the ending. May change later.

This might not have been a perfect book, but it was the perfect book for me at the time I read it.

So slow...just one bad thing after another. Not my cup of tea.

Interesting and unique characters and a good representation of the ups and downs of relationships.

This book was okay! I like family dramas and this felt very similar to Commonwealth by Ann Patchett to me. It covers the stories of parents and their children over the span of a decade and the decisions they made. I quite enjoyed it, but it definitely didn’t suck me in. Just kept me satisfied.

Loved this book. I enjoyed seeing the lives play out over the different decades - so much time is covered but Keane keeps the pace moving and held my interest throughout it all. Highly recommend this.

4.5 stars for a book that might hold the record for me taking the longest amount of time ever to actually complete a book from start to finish. It held my attention during this weird time despite my intermittent attempts at reading, and I always dug right back in to the story and characters.

3 5 really.
It has gotten rave reviews. I liked it but didn't love it... it kept me interested and I smiled and welled up a bit at some parts... but it's not one I would have trouble getting past or rave about to friends.

I really didn't know what to expect when I first started this. I didn't read too much on the plot line, I just had heard great reviews on it.
What started as a simple idea - two families who live next door to each other in the fictional town of Gillam, have their entire lives upended by tragic consequences. The relationship between the Stanhopes and the Gleesons never starts simply as we delve into the connection between Kate and Pete, and the binds that tie the two families. The ultimate consequences are connected by mental illness, love, marriage, and decades of regret. The title of the book sums up perfectly on the last page.
I loved Keane's writing. She can sum up five years of plot line in one page. At the same time, I did feel parts of the story went too quickly (marriage, college, etc.) The story wrapped itself up really well and I was satisfied how she ended it. The book made full circle and I didn't need to know what else was going to happen within the two families. I look forward to her other novels.
