I still really love this book, but it didn't excite me like it used to. Lowered from 5 stars to 4.

at first, i couldn’t shake off the feeling of weirdness coming from lennie’s relationships with both toby and joe. even the catchphrase on the cover, « i’m supposed to be grieving, not falling in love », didn’t seem right to me. i mean, thankfully, i’ve never experienced a loss as traumatic as hers, but i couldn’t really understand why she did the things she did with toby. i think i would’ve much better appreciated the book if it had only been about joe.

i disliked the fact that the romance was so quick to happen ... i’m a sucker for slow burn, what can i say?

i read i’ll give you the sun before the sky is everywhere and i was glad to find the same writing that i had loved so much in igyts. jandy nelson has a way of describing emotions and settings and characters that make me long to be in the story with them and to feel the same overflowing love they feel.

sure, her characters are flawed, they don’t make the best choices, but isn’t it what’s best about them? I don’t know about you, but i’m tired of book girls and book boys being perfect and doing the right thing at the right time. I prefer reading stories about people being like me, so i can relate to them.

I wish I knew Joe and Gram in real life. The characterisation is just so on point !! they have passions and expressions that make them so real and i almost expected them to enter my house to bring me croissants and paint beautiful green women on my walls. Joe, like Brian and Oscar, is the kind of guy i would fall in love with, because they’re all so luminous.

I can understand why so much people disliked this novel, because at first i was disturbed by lennie’s action taking place after losing her sister. and sure, it can seem a bit cliché. but coming from a girl who hates romance and cliches, this book is worth a try.

I know a lot of people were annoyed with Lennie's carry on but grief makes you do stupid things and to act in a way that you wouldn't normally so I can totally understand & forgive her.

For me it was more that there was a lot of filler that I found myself skimming and I never really got the love between Lennie & Joe.

I thought Sarah the BFF was a bit of a cartoon character as were gran & Big.

I guess overall I've just feel like I have read better books dealing with similar themes for Eg.

Treat me of a monster because I didn’t like this book.
I know going over somebody’s death is impossible, that the pain only fades but never disappears, I have lived it myself.
But come on, can you seriously buy the poor-girl-who-almost-hooks-up-with-her-dead-sister’s-boyfriend act? Especially if [spoiler] the guy actually was the sister’s fiance and they were about to have a baby???
Honestly ??
I hated that book.
I thought it was badly written, the main character was whiny and as dumb as hell and the whole book just annoyed me sooo much.
Treat me of a monster. I won’t judge.

I kind of knew that from the moment I bought this book I wasn't going to love it. Me and my friend got it as an impulsive buy because the plot seemed so absurd. A girl falls in love with the guy her dead sister was engaged with??? but there's also another guy in the story so now she's all confused.

I thought the romance between Lennie and Joe was so sudden. They barely knew each other and he was already going over to her place and being friendly with her family to the point of helping them out with house chores?? I also don't understand how he suddenly forgave Lennie for her cheating and lying. He was really upset about it for weeks and then she writes him a poem and suddenly everything is okay. I just thought the ending was very rushed.

I didn't enjoy the writing style. Felt like there were too many metaphors for my liking. The author also does that thing where she uses certain words to try to "relate" to her younger audience, although no one really uses those words.

I also didn't really like the characters. They all seemed kind of superficial apart from Gram and Big.

The book talked a lot about their mom's disappearence and the theories they would make about it, just to finish it and not find out where she is. I guess that's the point, but I wish there was more information about her mom since it was something that was constantly being mentioned.
I think I would have also liked it more if we had gotten to know Bailey.

Overall, it was not totally awful. For some reason I was still interested in knowing what was gonna happen. Having poems written in papers spread all over the city was a good idea.
