More middle grade than I initially realized. A real shame because there's so much wasted story potential here. The concept is cool, but very little explored because the murder-mystery plot seems to be the real focus. That said, it doesn't happen until over halfway through the book, which truly stunned me. Until then, this plods along with a lot of boring social stuff that kind of goes nowhere and political stuff that is so muddled I swear to God I have no idea what the author was going for. The characters are thin but suggested to be more complex than we ever see on the page. Cecily is an absolute bitch the entire book to the point I was desperate for her to die and then the girls for some reason remember her as being kind, something we never see on the page. I probably should have just quit a few chapters in, but this was easy enough to read and short enough that I just decided to finish it in case it suddenly improved.
