For a book aimed at children, the book was quite advanced. It has very few pictures, but the inclusivity of countries represented and mentioned in this book is amazing. With creatures from real folk law and explanations for things like the Lock Ness Monster and Bigfoot, this is quite the interesting read for a lazy afternoon. The language is not meant for the average child reader and the targeted audience seems a little hit and miss for this, particularly the number of larger words. I enjoyed the book, I have always enjoyed the simplicity of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, but I do think she is lost for who she is writing for. Also, it is important to separate my disgust of the author from this book, as her political views have put a damper on all her works. Nevertheless, this is a cute light read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a way to spend a bored afternoon.

Pure fun. Listening to Eddie Redmayne narrate the audiobook was a particularly good time.

A fun quick read, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is the textbook that Harry, Ron, and Hermione use for Care of Magical Beasts at Hogwarts. Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore introduce the book and provide background on why Muggles can't see magical beasts, what is considered a beast vs. a being, etc. Interspersed throughout are funny comments by Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Rowling's amazing imagination really comes through here. While some beasts are originally from mythology (dragons, sphinxes, etc.) others are completely new. My favorite is the fwooper, a brightly colored bird whose song drives you to insanity.

I have the 2001 edition, but a new version is coming out in 2017. The terrific "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie introduces Newt as a character in the Harry Potter movie universe. Some of what my 2001 edition says about Newt is different from the movie (in the movie, Newt was expelled from Hogwarts; in the book, he graduated and went to work for the Ministry of Magic). I'll be curious to see if the new edition updates Newt's bio and adds some new beasts (there were a few in the movie that aren't in the book, I believe). An excellent companion to the Harry Potter books!

Anything Harry Potter related is 5 stars in my book. Again, I listened to this audiobook instead of reading the book myself, but I really do think that is the way to best experience some works of art.
