A beautiful story of two young men and their hope for a better life, this graphic novel captures the essence of what it means to live in a refugee camp. These two young boys were torn from their parents because of the violence in Somalia and sent to a refugee camp in Kenya. After many years of hardship, they’re able to resettle in the United States. This young adult book gives us insights into how refugees experience life and life and the ways that we might focus our energies to help them have better experiences.

Engaging and accessible retelling of co-author Omar Mohamed’s experience growing up in a refugee camp. 

Certainly worth watching for a copy for the classroom, because it does a lovely job of telling the bare bones while leaving darker tragedies between the lines.

This was an incredibly written and beautifully illustrated graphic novel. 

With such an important and relevant story to tell, the graphic novel route was a great choice. Having the visuals to go along with the text and speech throughout only gives the reader a more in-depth experience with a situation that thousands and thousands of people in the world experience.

'When Stars Are Scattered' took me on a journey with two brothers and with my emotions. It is both a powerful and educational story and I loved every single moment of this reading experience.

This was a moving graphic novel and memoir. The artwork and coloring really complimented the storytelling.

In my opinion, it veered a little towards inspiration porn, which is common with stories about disabled folks as well as with refugee experiences written for a western audience. I don't want to judge too harshly though because from the author's note at the end it seems like it was a collaborative writing process and that Omar was satisfied with how his story was told.
