People have been recommending this series to me for forever and after reading the first book, I cannot figure out why it has taken me so long to listen to them! Yes, it is very long. Yes, There are a lot of characters & it is hard to keep track of everyone. And yes, it is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Despite the length & character list, Martin pulls you in with his descriptive language and twists. I really enjoyed how each part of the story is told in a different character's view. It makes "choosing sides" very difficult & causes the reader to have an emotional reaction to each person, good or bad.

. In the first book Martin does not allow the reader to have complete insight into the characters. We see what they see, hear what they hear, but never know exactly what they think or what they are going to do. At first I thought this a flaw, but now that I have started the 2nd book I realize how genius Martin is. At first this was frustrating to me. But now I realize it allows the reader to get to the know the character as the story goes on, to allow the reader to come to one opinion & then have that opinion grow or change as the story continues. Pretty brilliant if you ask me. And the best part about it? There 5+ more to be read!

Eerst de serie gezien, dan het boek gelezen, en daardoor kwam het wat minder interessant over dan het misschien was. Met deel twee/seizoen twee gaan we het omgekeerd doen: eerst het boek, dan de serie.
