I really want to give this book like, 2 stars, but my biggest complaints are more to do with personal preference so I'm going with 3 stars instead.

This book was very highly recommended in a group I'm a part of and I thought I was going to love it. Unfortunately, I didn't like it very much at all.

Dante and Kat were...okay. I didn't hate them and I didn't hate them as a couple or how they came to be. But the story wasn't really interesting. The word that came to mind while reading was "clunky." A lot of little things didn't make sense which was distracting and didn't make for an immersive reading experience.

The writing wasn't bad, although I noticed a few errors, and things that were worded poorly/incorrectly.

There were a ton of spicy scenes (pretty much constantly) throughout the whole book, but they weren't anything special or exciting, IMO. Some of them were actually a little uncomfortable.
For example, the very first time Dante sexually advances on Kat, it's kind of by force, and this was after knowing she'd been assaulted in the past. Of course, it was written into Kat's internal dialogue that she was attracted to him and okay with what he was doing, but the scene still gave me the ick. He has a thing throughout the book of wanting to help her heal from her past, but in a way that seems forceful in and of itself. It's just weird and I think it could have been handled better. Their sexual interactions laced with emotional undertones should have been hot and passionate, but to me they were weird and uncomfortable. Not all their interactions were like this, just a few, but it was enough to spoil the bunch for me.

I was not aware that there was a pregnancy trope in this book and wish I would have known. It wasn't terrible, but I do my best to avoid books that include it. (This was something I disliked but that didn't affect the rating.)

I had planned on reading the whole series back to back, but I won't be doing that. I don't know if I'll end up reading the other books at all. Maybe one day, if I ever run out of things to read.

I guess I finished it, but it was a sick fascination at some point. I know it’s a dark romance, and I can handle that. But I am just never into graphic sexual assault scenes. There was so much sex. But not satisfying sex. Or any sort of fantasy level to it. The hero was garbage. He learned nothing. He gave her nothing. He was not good.

She was a victim. Over and over again. This book was just torture porn. Leave this poor woman alone.

I can’t believe that I finished it. I kept thinking it would get better and it never did. SJ Tilly did it so much better.

Dante has very few redeeming qualities in my eyes and I feel the romance between he and Kat never developed past sex.

This was an example of trauma and abuse being used too casually as plot points. Read content warnings AND keep in mind that triggering content isn’t done well.

The way she portrays female characters overcoming / recovering from abuse is so wildly unrealistic that it pushed me “out of the moment” with the book and nudged me further and further into disinterest with the plot and distrust of the author. I don’t expect romance books to be realistic, but portrayal of trauma’s impact/recovery was absurd.

I’m also confused about how this book managed to have an obsessive MMC *and* was ultimately pretty boring.

It’s a kidnapping mafia book, I typically love that sub genre, but nothing really happened. There wasn’t enough plot or character development in my opinion.

Dark Romance, Mafia, Stockholm Syndrome, 3 1/2 🔥

Good book with a surprisingly great plot! The smut was also fiiiiiine 😏😏

The writing is a little off sometimes. There's some grammar mistakes here and there and I feel the author totally missed the description of the FMC??

But the plot and twist and what ever else happend in the book was very entertaining!

I cannot wait to start on "Joey" now!!!

The beginning of the book was actually really nice at first with all the tension and everything so that it was easy to get into reading the book, however, as soon as they got together it kind of went downhill from there. There was overall just too many miscommunication problems and fights. He also clearly has aggression problems by going to her throat for simply asking a question. She also wasn’t much better though due to the distrust and her being so dramatic by automatically always assuming the worst. However, I do understand that it might be due to her past and everything but after a while it really gets annoying and similar books I read also don’t really have that problem. There was also mentions of the fmc reading on her kindle and romance books with naked men on the cover which I had those mentions in books because I’m trying to escape and not read about someone reading romance while they are literally getting railed 24/7 by their hot spouse. Besides that, Joey was so childish and annoying that I can’t see her getting better with her behavior so I will read her book and see what happens though might get dnf‘ed because she annoyed me hella much. Anyways, i’m the end the book wasn’t that bad altogether but there was just these certain things that really annoyed me and it the book just kind of lost its potential at the halfway point, still finished and enjoyed it though.
