I watched an ad to get free wifi on the plane to be able to text my friend that I loved this book, that’s how good it was.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this whenever I put it down, longing to finish it and know what would happen to the characters. I was scared by how many books are in the Cosmere Universe, but if they’re all like this? Worth it. So. Worth. It.

My first foray into the universe of Sanderson novels and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

As with any high fantasy series, this book had a good amount of world building with a fairly large cast of characters with a variety of roles to get to know. That part can feel like a bit of a slog, even in the best of novels, but Sanderson does it well. It feels natural and he builds on the information in a way that is digestible and intriguing.

I really like the magic system - it doesn’t feel too overdone - and the flaws of our heroes feel “real” instead of manufactured as they sometimes do.

I was kept fairly on my toes about what would come next and appreciate the fact that Sanderson doesn’t shy away from putting his characters in tough situations - or killing then when necessary (I love an author unafraid of hurting his audiences heart with a good murder, what can I say?).

I was seriously hooked the last 40% especially where I found it hard to put down as I waited to see if our band of rebels would be successful in pulling off this huge feat. While the writing is nothing spectacular, Sanderson can keep his readers hooked and the writing style worked for me surprisingly well.

It was a satisfying ending and I can’t wait to pick up the next book in the Mistborn series!

This is a re-read and now that I have read more of the cosmere the little bits that nod and hint to other things are actually really fun to notice.  I still love the world building and the magic system but the characters are pretty meh.

I was going to DNF this book halfway through. It took so long to get started but I’m SO GLAD I DIDN’T!

I absolutely fell in love with these characters. Found family is my all time favorite and this story had a lot of that. There was too much death though and I’m a sap. I want everyone alive and happy and healthy at the end of a story but with stories that go like this, it was inevitable.

The ending was really rushed but it makes sense as there’s like 57 more books in this series so…do I pick up the next one? Can I handle the heartbreak? Stay tuned.

The beginning of the book felt quite slow. Trying to follow the politicking and planning was a little convoluted and boring. But then the action picks up in the second half of the book and there's some really well written action scenes. I love the magic systems in this book and the concept of the world is really interesting (even if I don't fully understand how they grow food if all the plants are dead and brown... like, supposedly there are no flowers but they do eat fruit??). I really enjoyed watching Vin
grow into her allomantic powers
. And I loved Kelsier as a character and his relationship with Vin. Seized also became one of my favorite characters.
I don't know if I'll enjoy the next book with the two of them not in it. I would hope that Seized comes back from his journey soon to help Vin or that he gets some of his own main character time.

While I did enjoy this book, and I feel like the ending elevated it from three stars to three and a half stars, I think that it really would have benefited from losing about a hundred pages. 640 pages was just too long and while there was stuff happening the whole time, the book still felt slow paced. Not a specific hundred pages, I just don't think that we needed to see everything in such detail.
I did enjoy the ending, I thought it was a rather satisfying conclusion. I'm not sure Brandon Sanderson is the author for me though, because I personally find his writing very 'telling rather than showing' and while I don't always need a lot of flowery descriptions and deep character introspection, again, 640 pages is a lot to just be told what is happening. If you like books where you just turn your brain off and have the story happen at you, then you'll like this book.
And while I definitely didn't predict all of the plot twists, the one about
the Lord Ruler not being the one who wrote the logbook
was kind of obvious by the time it was revealed.
Also the extreme amount of parallels between
this book and Brandon Sanderson's own Steelheart
just made me kind of mad.
At the end it felt like I'd just read the same book in a different font.
