While I ultimately enjoyed this audiobook and look forward to the next two in this trilogy, there were aspects that give me pause.
At the beginning it felt much more like a adolescent/young adult story: teenage magical main character in non-magical America with family issues (to put those issues mildly). The story intrigued me but it definitely felt juvenile (which is fine if that’s what it is).
Then the narrator switched and clearly the story was I was in another branch of the story, not only due to the second narrator but also with the tone. It took most of the book to finally put the two branches together as part of the same tree (which is also fine and kept me speculating). This second branch, while having a clearly more magical setting, had a decidedly more “adult” feel to in respect to the descriptions of sexual encounters. I don’t read romance novels and didn’t particularly enjoy the unnecessary detail that I felt wasn’t needed in this story… the details in these encounters just felt distracting and out of place with the feel of the rest of the book.
I loved the magical world created by this author and the way he wove it together with our current non-magical world. I enjoyed the characters. The storyline grew on me as it developed. I didn’t feel the sexual descriptions added to the story in any way.

Orson Scott Card my go down as my favorite author.
I have always loved Enders Game and the books following its story. The Lost Gate is so damn good it deserves a place right beside it!
The mythological world and our reality mixing with yet again a small boy caught in the mix with an extraordinary gift to create GATES!
You need to do yourself a favor. Buy the book or the audio book (I think Card prefers you listen to his stories) right now! Get on it! I am getting the sequel The Gate Thief asap on Audible and can't wait to see where the story goes.

Read this book. It is good.

I greatly enjoyed this book. As a lover of mythology I greatly enjoyed the world that the author delivered. I also really loved the personalities of Danny's family, as it felt well matched to the gods they were meant to resemble. Often times I have read books where similar characters acted with current morals and attitudes. The end result being that it felt far less authentic, where in this book I felt more drawn in. Greatly looking forward to part two.

I enjoyed the worlds created in this book. I listened to it and the actors were wonderful and added to the story. As Card said in the afterward, his books are intended to be like tales around a campfire. This was an interesting oral tale and I'm glad that he is continuing the story because while the ending was fine it left me wanting more.
