Lionel the lion believes it is his right to take more than his fair share, whether it's an extra instrument that his elephant friend had her eye on or a purple balloon the bunny was about to grab. It doesn't matter that he already has multiple instruments and balloons; he wants more. His friends remind Lionel to share, but their advice falls on deaf ears. When Lionel eats all of the cake at someone else's birthday party he goes too far. Will Lionel learn how to share with his friends or will he end up being friendless? The messaging of the story is fairly heavy-handed, but younger readers will certainly connect to it. The mixed media illustrations in softer tones are quite detailed and lovely. This would make a good classroom resource for social emotional learning lessons.
