I really enjoyed this book. It was a great romance novel and I’m glad it stayed in its own little bubble of Battu. The separation yet connection with the rest of the cannon is a great change. Not everything has to be connected.

I think my favourite Star Wars books are ones like this. Two unknown characters who fall in love.

The added bonus of this place was there are many places in this, and foods and drinks in this, that I have had and visited. That’s weird to say about Star Wars, but it’s true now thanks to Galaxy’s Edge. Having been there and seen those places and knowing what some of those things taste like definitely added to the enjoyment of this book for me.

It was fine, but I'm disappointed. I hold everything to the level of Lost Stars, and this one felt like it should have had the same dynamic characters and development. Instead, it happened over the course of about a day, had unrealistic character 180s, and it felt more like I was reading for junior high than YA, even though the main characters were 19/20. The writing was super choppy and was so much info-dumping and telling rather than showing and letting me discover the world, and it grated on me immediately. Besides that, it was boring. The mystery element didn't come through for me, and I'm not entirely sure where this even is supposed to fit in the timeline of the Star Wars Universe. Bummed about this one- pass unless you're desperate for Star Wars content.

Zoraida Córdova is one of the best authors of our time. I'm convinced.

I've always loved Star Wars and read so many EU books growing up, so it was really fun to pick up a Star Wars book again, especially once set in the new era (sequal trilogy)!

Jules and Izzy (oh I could cry thinking of them!) are just AMAZING characters. You can't help but love them, hurt for them, feel like you understand them because they understand you. Córdova has such a way with characters and I have yet to find her equal! She is able to make them so realistic, with flaws and failures and weaknesses and rough edges, and yet they are so sympathetic and relatable. I see myself in both Jules and Izzy, and in experiencing their story, I feel like I have been emboldened to grow as a person.

In the words of Jules, "Just because you get food poisoning one time, doesn't mean you stop eating." Truly, the themes of trust and selflessness in this story hits so close to home for me. So close. And I really appreciate the care with which Córdova handled that message.

It was also especially fun to have all of the lore of Batuu in these pages! I haven't been to Disney's Galaxy's Edge yet, but reading this book makes me want to go so badly so I can walk where Jules and Izzy walked and really live in their shoes for a day! I want to tie a string on the wishing tree, and swim in the cenote, and touch the obilisk. I feel like I've already lived there in my spirit and I can't wait to do it physically someday!

Plus, this book was a quick read! Exellently paced, I read this book in two days (and maybe slacked on some things but it was so worth it!) I just loved living in these pages and I can't wait to read it again when I'm in a reading slump or need a cozy adventure.

Spring 2020;

Back on my Star Wars quest, yep. Especially in the wake of the new announcement for Old Republic and looking at how I managed to get through 30% of the new canon during the last third of this year. Now the aim is to get a whole lot more of it knocked out, too.

This was a cute little basically one-day (two/three day) romp, with dual narrators, coming back into contact and falling back in love super fast, while basically having a bumpy, exciting, highs and lows little smuggler-heist girl vs. golden-hearted farm boy dreaming of the stars. It was far more 'everyman story' than your normal main-storyline Star Wars, but I found it deeply charming and down to earth.

WELL, I SURE HOPE THERE WILL BE MORE OF THESE KIDS.

Izzy and Jules, despite having some of the blandest Star Wars names since Luke and Leia, are vibrant, charming, witty characters with a heart-wrenching history and a fantastic push-and-pull relationship that had me bouncing on the edge of my seat with joy. Perfect foils and well-matched lovers, despite the distance and the years between them, I was rooting for them from page one, and I can't wait to see what more adventures the galaxy has in store for them.

Perhaps a little heavy-handed on the marketing for the theme park (I fully expect every drink that was so specifically named in the book to be on a menu next time I'm in Disneyland), this book was still a fun ride that did a marvelous job of introducing people to this new world, this new corner of the galaxy.

I LIVETWEETED THIS BOOK BECAUSE I LOVED IT TOO MUCH TO NOT YELL ABOUT IT: https://twitter.com/esseastri/status/1166602303836696576
