The Between has been my introduction to Tananarive Due and I'm mad at myself for not picking a book by her sooner. This was a tense psychological thriller about a man whose world starts unraveling around him when he starts experiencing strange events. The book will leave questioning if the events Hilton experiences are real or things he's made up. The ups and downs of Hilton makes this even more interesting because as readers we see his POV and then we see the world react around him. I had to go back and re-read several chapters just to make sure I wasn't crazy. It's a short read, about 270+ pages and every one made an impact.

Due is masterfully at creating tension in this book. For being almost 30 years old it doesn’t feel dated in the least. My original love of reading is rooted in suspense and horror. I’ve leaned further and further away from it the older get as I’ve found much of the recent material subpar. I don’t need gore. I don’t need trauma. I don’t need monsters that I can’t even visualize despite paragraphs and pages devoted to describing what they look like. Ghost stories that play with a characters perceptions of reality, when done well, are untouchable. The Between is untouchable.
