The .25 I have to give this book is SOLELY for the Rat Thing, Fido. That's it. The rest of this was the absolute worst. This is supposed to be "classic" Sci fi but I just found it to be so blatantly sexist, homophobic, and racist, and for the life of me I can't figure out why people aren't commenting on it. Most of the commentary revolves around the action scenes, and most of the negative reviews are around the way historical things are presented (which to be fair, was bad. But it wasn't offensive). I read somewhere that it's meant to be satire, but satire of what? And WHY? what point are we trying to make here? And if we are trying to make some point, it seems it's been lost on its audience.

This book is not Neal Stevenson's best work. I enjoyed Diamond Age despite its flaws, but this book was nearly unreadable. The characterization was weak, I couldn't stand the main man's POV, and the solution to everything was just to be good at fighting, which isn't a very interesting way to explore a sci-fi world. Also there's a graphic rape scene of a minor that isn't framed well as rape, so that was awful
