I appreciated a book tailored to younger children - there's a little bit of new material vs the original and mostly more examples - and a lot of the advice sounds promising. But 2-7 still seemed like too large of an age range; it's hard to imagine a lot of this working with a two-year-old.

Reread update:
I’m glad that I reread this. I found a lot of the ideas to be very helpful. The book is well laid out and the information is well presented. I like the model the authors use with plenty of examples to demonstrate ways and times to use the ideas.

Initial thoughts:
A great book of information, strategies and examples.

This was fine! Always good to reiterate concepts but if you have followed Dr. Becky Kennedy or Big Little Feelings for any amount of time there is nothing earth-shattering in here.

Well intentioned, and at times made good sense. If I can be very daring and summarize the entire thesis: confrontation and argument with children this age will not be successful, and should be avoided at all costs. In the name of peace, you can re-direct or distract your child by endorsing their feelings, tricking them, or presenting them with choices.

Needless to say, I do not agree with this paradigm in all situations. It seems to rest on the assumption that crying or conflict is inherently bad, which is not clear to me. But the advice herein is well meaning and gives perspective on parental challenges because more than 50% of the text involves letters from parents who are struggling with young children listening or behaving.

Enjoyed this for new ideas and perspectives on communicating with children since it can be a challenge for them to express their big feelings.

I'm a preschool teacher and read this book to help with communication at work. I've found the "acknowledge emotions and state what happened" to be very helpful, even only a day or two after finishing the book. It's easier to convince the kids to help out with what I need and there is less of a need to get loud.
