This book has great pacing, and I never wanted to put it down. Lisa Unger’s ability to build stories that run parallel to the plot before gracefully arcing together allows this story to be riveting from start to finish.

A story of family, genetics, history, and how all these elements make us who we are. An element of mystery that serves to move the plot along, but doesn’t have you biting your nails at the unknown. Unger takes your hand and leads you down the path of each character, exploring their flaws and motives while allowing you to make your own decision on the morality of their choices.

VERY slowly. It didn't really pick up until about halfway through, and only for a short time. The ending was anticlimactic.

Twisty thriller with a modern premise, plenty of red herrings abound.

Spoilers throughout: Honestly I really rather would have listened to a story from the perspective of the killer. I thought she had a way more compelling story than a bunch of rich people making excuses cause "family" I'm also clearly not the target audience cause I will and have cut off family members for far less horrible stuff then rape and pedophilia.

The first 80% of this book, I thought it was fine…good ideas but wasn’t loving the execution. However, I was still curious to see what it was all leading up to. The final 20%, it jumped the shark. In two back to back chapters, there was underage rape, gaslighting, animal cruelty/death, more gaslighting and suicide.
I thought “wow I’m rooting for the killer!”. Until you find out the motivation of this killer is eugenics.
In the end, this book just wasn’t for me.
