A very fun queer noir. Knives Out, but in a 1950s-found family-queer manor type way.

This is such a wonderful book!  I love the main character, Evander "Andy" Mills. The books take place in San Francisco in the early 1950s when being gay isn't a crime but dancing and hand-holding between same-sex couples is considered an improper act and an arrestable offense. Andy had worked as a police inspector until he was caught in a raid in a gay bar and fired. He agrees to stay at Lavender House while investigating the suspicious death of a woman who used to live there.

Lavender House is an unusual place for the time period. All of the residents and staff are openly gay and keep each others' private lives a secret from the outside world. While there, Andy is able to reflect on his own life while investigating the crime. I enjoyed the mystery and getting to know Andy and immediately started reading the second book in this series after finishing this book.

4.5 for me really, but I felt it was better to give more stars than less. I picked up this book for the mystery but stayed for the characters. I think the lead is a good strong character with good growth through the story as he becomes more comfortable with himself (also excited for possible future love interests!) My only quibble with the story was that the villain felt a little predictable for me, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the story. It’s not just the characters that made the story great, but there was some very heartfelt moments that while I myself couldn’t relate to, I have seen others struggle with. More then once did I want to give these characters hugs and tell them they were okay. While maybe not the strongest mystery I’ve ever read, I look forward to solving more crimes with Private Investigator Mills.
