Brilliant read. It is amazing how Matthiessen wrote such a long book describing only his surroundings, the beautiful path he hiked with GS and the sherpas and the people he met in this journey, with very little bits about himself. I thought the book was brilliant because of the focus only on the natural beauty.
Towards the end, I was hoping Matthiessen caught at least a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard.

Must read if you love the great outdoors and have an interest in Buddhism.

Would have been better without the spiritual talk.

I savoured every sentence in this book…reading it slowly, re-reading whole paragraphs. The writing is gorgeous, the descriptions of his trek in the mountains of Nepal are captivating. I love this combination of outward journey in the wilds of nature, and inward journey of self-discovery.
