The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward

I've been meaning to read JR Ward for sometime- if the books are this long, there must be some substance to them. No, absolutely not. The most disappointing aspect is that the story is actually good. It's told from multiple perspectives and you actually get character background and their motivations. How did this woman get published? That is my biggest qualm with this. How? Let's review a few literary gems:

Talk about a lotta chefs, she thought as she scooted in and out and around all the white-coated, toque-hatted men and women who were giving themselves scoliosis making filo-dough and stuffed-mushroom'y thingies

Even if it's a stream of consciousness, that's just bad. Really bad. If I took a shot every time JR Ward wrote a non-existent word I would not have made it 30% and would charge her for my copay as I get admitted to the hospital from alcohol poisoning.

DNF'ed at 60%

WOW WOW WOW. YES YES YES. I have always loved J.R Ward and her writing, the Black Dagger Brotherhood is my favorite series and she is brilliant. The Bourbon Kings was no different. The writing, the characters, the STORY! It was amazing. I laughed, I cried, I was thrilled and questioned. I really CAN NOT wait for the second book to come out because this series is going to be the same maybe even more success as her others.

J.R Ward thank you for never disappointing.

DNF....

I think it's safe to say that I won't be finishing this anytime soon of if ever. Maybe I might go back this at a later date...but not for now, I mean it's been close to two years, it's time I gave up hope of ever getting back to it!

It was just so full of drama but that drama was some of the most boring stuff I've ever read, and sooooo predictable.

On the Derby weekend the lives of the privileged Bradford family start to unravel. Edward refuses to visit the family home, Easterly, broken and damaged by a kidnapping his only pleasures are his horses. Gin is in love with one man, the father of her illegitimate teenage daughter, but is being forced to marry another. Lane is brought home by a health scare to the woman he was brought up by, the cook, and this brings him back to both his estranged wife and the love of his life. Their father William seems to have bankrupted the family and has power of attorney over the business as their mother is incapacitated.
All of this sounds like the plot for an episode of one of the classic 1980s soap operas and, to be honest, that's exactly what it reads like! Sex, drugs, power, business and a setting in the distillery business are all the key elements of the sort of book I normally run a mile from - a thick paperback with embossed gold titles and liberal scatterings of fashionable names - and again this is exactly that. However it is a really entertaining read, a piece of escapism and a lot of fun. There are very few ends tied up here and it leads onto the next book in the proposed 3-book series. Like a fast-food meal I gorged myself, felt sick afterwards but would definitely go back for more in a few months time!

What a storyline! But wow the number of characters is astounding. I have definitely grown to like Lanes character, however I'm not too sure about Lizzie, there is just something about her that I don't like. The story truly reads like a soap opera and at times is very predictable. My favorite person by far is Miss Aurora, I do hope we learn more about her in the coming books. I am also wanting more background on Little V.E., her character doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense yet and is a bit confusing as to the reclusive behavior.

Argh I don't know... I guess this confirms why I generally don't read contemporary romance. I accept some unrealistic things and characters in already unrealistic paranormal romance, and I apparently haven't got the same expectations to the writing. And I can excuse a lot in place of good - or at least entertaining storytelling. But in "realistic" romances and books I need something more... more than clichés, more than "easy" writings and more than stereotypical characters. This was just a soap opera.

I read this because I generally enjoy spending a couple of hours with "unrealistic" entertainment, when reading Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. But this was hours without fulfillment and I will never get those back.
