Way more gruesome and tragic than I expected it to be. Very heavy topics, maybe not the ideal bedtime read. Still a beautifully written story with interesting themes explored in front of a sobering historical context.

Two of my favorite creators joining together to create this novelization of the movie is just--*chef kiss* Guillermo del Toro's world with Cornelia Funke's writing--and the artwork! Just...oh my god. The only nitpick I have is that Funke wrote that the bottle broke during That Scene, where del Toro specifically mentions in interviews (and it's seen in the movie itself) that the bottle didn't break.

This is one of my favorite movies so I was excited to see it in book form. Love the cover! It's dark and beautiful just like the film. This is a great companion novel.

Gosh this was a good book and it got me back into reading. It had very strong themes and ideas which I loved and adored.

It was very slow to read at times. And some chapters where a pain to get through, as they were written from Vidals perspective (most despicable character ever written)

One of my favorite movies. This is a great adaptation which retains the fairy tale format. I enjoyed the in between tales that further develop the story beyond what the film could do. Of course, wonderful illustrations. This story is very visually driven.

While I really enjoyed this book, because it was indeed a very exciting anf yet easy read, I do not think that it is actually suited for the targeted age group.
