Oh Charlie.
I relate to her in so many ways that it’s depressing. Sometimes I wanted to slap her for her poor decisions. Yet I also would highlight those parts because I related to them.

I hate Riley so much too. When he pinned her down and was saying he was just joking and asking if she thought he’d actually hurt her. Like yes. It happens to millions of women all over, all the time. Also he’s weird AF. I hate that he even slightly redeemed himself in the very end. Not exactly. But he seemed to be trying to do better. More so forced. For that period of time at least. But I wonder if it would stick.

I hate Julie too for enabling him. And the scene where she told Charlie off for showing her scars? Absolutely not. As someone who has struggled like that, most if not everyone with those issues, do not get triggered by scars. Scars are a part of the healing process. I have my own scars. Doesn’t mean I set myself off. And if it does set me off it’s because the scars are. on. me. Seeing others with scars and getting triggered means you got some stuff to work on. And Julie saying that people there have to heal and that’s why she can’t show her scars? What. That is a part of the healing process. Showing your scars is a HUGE step. You made her back track in anything. Hate you for that one. I also hate her for enabling Riley. But I also hate that I understand why she did it.

At the end of the day, this book made me feel seen. It made me feel frustrated. It made me see what others might see when looking at decisions I made when put into somewhat similar positions as Charlie. I also love a book with characters that can make me feel so frustrated. I also love a book that can give me a wild ride of emotions. Even if most of the emotions are out of anger or sadness. That being said, I loved this book. Not a 5 star feel, but I loved it for what it did for me.

3.75

I'm a bit mad that I have to rate this book a 3.75,  because many parts of it were very good, especially the beginning. But then it started getting kind of edgy and cringe, and the main character was kind of becoming unlikable (which is part of the plot and is a good portrayal of 17-year-old self-hating girls). Sometimes the author pulled out these lines that felt like they were written by a 15-year-old chronically online girl, and some of the writing made me cringe. However, other parts of the book were really relatable for me as a mentally ill person. I was rooting for the characters, and they were all lovable. But then, the book concluded with everyone suddenly getting better, which is kind of unrealistic. So overall, I have to give it a low rating. It felt kind of amateurish.

I always find it hard to review books that I don’t enjoy and sadly this is one of them. It’s such a tricky book to rate as I can tell that it’s been well – researched and a lot of time, energy and effort has gone into creating it but I just didn’t click with it and that is okay – Not every book is for everyone and this just happened to not be a book for me.

Our main character Charlie is in an inpatient facility after a suicide attempt, after Charlie is released from the facility and goes to live somewhere far away. She gets a job and finds somewhere to live. Starts trying to make it on her own and all that.

This is a book that has lots of Trigger warnings in so please do go and look these up before you consider reading. For me I just found the voice of the main Character too flat and I just couldn’t connect with her which made this book difficult for me to get drawn into and I think part of this was down to the chapters, somewhere a few pages others where half a page long and It just didn’t feel connected to me personally which made it difficult to follow especially as some had time jumps between them

After reading You’d Be Home Now, I knew this was going to be just as good. Turned out it was better. This book was devastatingly beautiful. The characters were full of flaws, some more than others, every person just trying to stay alive the best they could. It was raw and reflective of so many people’s experiences. Beautifully written.
