I loved this legal thriller set in the gritty tenderloin district. You saw the best and worst of men in this fantastic read. I could not put it down. The case was enthralling and the action/danger seemed real and close to home. I recommend this book highly. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my review.

Pros
+ I love legal thrillers where the main character is a defense attorney rather than a prosecutor.
+ Excellent use of multiple POVs

Cons
- Repeated comments from the main character and others that the media is too harsh on the Catholic Church and priests. Felt like the author had an axe to grind and was roping the reader into it.
- The case against Father Thomas Martin never really seems solid so his exoneration felt too easy.

I'm really torn on how I felt about this book, hence the 3 stars. Robert Dugoni is undoubtedly a great author, and this book was well done for sure, I just think it wasn't quite my normal style. I tend to go for more present day stories, and I think that's what may have thrown me off about this one. I really love his Tracy Crosswhite series, so I was excited to read this one too and while I enjoyed it, I'm sticking at a 3.5 stars.

* Thanks for NetGalley for the ARC! *

Eh.. it was okay. It tried to steer away from your typical thriller but failed. Everything was predictable and every character had a dark past to explain why they are the way they are. Nothing had me at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. It was okay, not great.

The first few chapters didn't grab me but once it got going, I didn't want to put it down. I think I liked this one more than any of the Tracy Crosswhite books. The plot wasn't what I thought it would be and I enjoyed the unfolding of the mystery. I liked the characters quite a bit and there were plenty of them.

This is my quick, "just finished this and need to get some thoughts down" review. The more detailed review is on C-Spot Reviews: http://reviews.c-spot.net/archives/5749.

Once I read the acknowledgements at the back of the book and saw that this book was actually written in the early 1990's, I gave it an extra star. The book is really not up to this author's standards, but I understand it's an early work that he re-worked and just released so it gets a star for a good story, written in the style of a young, new author.
