The writing style of this book is amazingly efficient. The story is heartbreaking and yet inspiring. I wonder what a book/story by her not centered on her life Will be like.

This is an impressive first book. Ford walks an interesting line between being so honest and personal that this story could belong to no one else and giving voice and validation to all those raised by imperfect parents. It is rare to find a writer as open and vulnerable as Ford.

A friend told me “I don’t want to give a bad review to a memoir because it’s their life, but it was boring”. That sums it up.
Ashley Ford is a beautiful author who created a very realistic look into her life as she grew up. But, maybe because it reflected a lot of things I experienced, it didn’t move it. It didn’t change me. Maybe I miss the mark on memoirs and expect too much. Which is why I gave it an extra star, because honestly this was 2 ⭐️ ⭐️ for me.

"When you write about you and me? Just tell the truth. Your truth. Don’t worry about nobody’s feelings, especially not mine. You gotta be tough to tell your truth, but it’s the only thing worth doing next to loving somebody."

I listened to the audiobook of this in August, and I cannot recommend it enough. Ford's memoir tells the story of her childhood and young adulthood, gently turning over relationships and individuals with honesty and grace as we understand how our early relationships with family, friends, and partners are part of the building of ourselves. It's a powerful book, and I'm grateful for Ford's vulnerability and generosity in telling her story. Pick this up, and read it!
