I thought it was time I read this classic, having fond memories of 'Silas Marner' and 'Adam Bede'. I found it hard work, with a sense of intense frustration towards the heroine and social mores of the day. No moments of unalloyed happiness to lighten a thoroughly depressing tale. The author's almost constant commentary alongside the story was not a style I remembered or enjoyed. Sorry George Eliot.

really didn't enjoy this, but this quote is probably one of my all time favorites

“We could never have loved the earth so well if we had had no childhood in it, if it were not the earth where the same flowers come up again every spring that we used to gather with our tiny fingers as we sat lisping to ourselves on the grass, the same hips and haws on the autumn hedgerows, the same redbreasts that we used to call ‘God’s birds’ because they did no harm to the precious crops. What novelty is worth that sweet monotony where everything is known and loved because it is known?”

No one else writes body language as well as George Eliot did. The physicality of her scenes makes them vivid and modern still. Her characters may not be as thoroughly lovable as Jane Austen's, but they are quite human.

I read this slog for my 100 books challenge. If you like this era of books, you’d probably like this one. I was for sure it was getting a 2 star review but the ending was so surprising not me that I thought maybe it was a worth a three star just for that. It’s not my kind of book, but I can still appreciate a good ending.

Reread 4/9/10. Still 4 stars. It was a little bit harder to get into this time around, but the story really picks up after the first half.
