If you're reading the Horus Heresy series, this book is essential because of the events it details, and I would recommend reading it just based on that. However, the prose in it is just terrible, a significant step down from the already mediocre writing of the previous book.

The weakest of the opening trilogy. Counter's writing doesn't hold up to the previous authors. The time jump from False Gods to this book means that a lot of Horus' development has just been skipped (maybe too much for Counter to take on?) The first half of the book was a little slow, the second half was gripping and mostly where I wanted it to go.

Fathers against sons, glory against honor, defiance against loyalty... The result is a galaxy in flames.
Galaxy in Flames wraps together nearly all of the material intended for the prologue of the Horus Heresy series. Because of that, the novel itself is an emotional roller-coaster. It is too easy to hate some characters, and feel honored to meet some others, since this is inevitable in the face of all-out war.
For now, we do not get to see many fully fleshed out characters, but this is how a prologue novel should be. It is the first ripple of a great tide. And it sure pierces through the heart.
