3.5 stars. I would have enjoyed this book so much more if it was as interesting before the 400th page as it was after. I’m not sure if I would have been able to finish the book if I was reading it on my own time but a few really good chapters towards the end boosted the rating. At least I can say I’ve read it

It's all about expectations. I went into this expecting a tightly-plotted crime drama. It's also the first Russian novel I've read. So those combined meant that every digression seemed an annoying distraction, and all the characters were too extreme and too absurd to take seriously. If I had gone in expecting simply to enjoy the beauty of Dostoyevky's prose or to explore some of the themes introduced in the novel, I would have enjoyed it more.

In the end I'm glad I read it, it made me think and is a novel I will remember for a while. But I did not particularly enjoy the reading of it.
