A fun, fast-paced adventure. The writing is fine (though many parts smacked of some anachronisms), and there were some parts that just felt so *real* -- like when Mary first starts wearing boys' clothing, and how she could *do* things like hold a horse for a few hours and get paid for it. Again, a quick, fun read with threads of real truth.

Strangely, my favorites parts were when Jacky was marooned on the island after the "Hope" got blown off course.

Very interesting to read it on the heels of "The Underground Girls of Kabul," where girls masquerade as boys because of the oppressive gender norms. Similarly, I'm still thinking about scurvy and the Age of Sail, and also thinking about Naomi Novik's "Temeraire" series (as Laurence was a mate on one of the British navy ships, and how the dragons had midwingmen instead of midshipmen).

I really enjoyed this book and have continued on with the rest of the series. All of the content warnings I assigned don't all apply to this book but, more so the series as a whole.  But, over all I really liked it. It was very interesting and entertaining. Basically, don't go into this book thinking it's middle grade, as I did :).
