Megan Miranda is adept at weaving together the past and the present; the twist here is a bit stronger than the first book of her’s I’ve read, because it feels a bit more foreshadowed as opposed to being kind of sudden. I’m starting to notice some themes that appear to be recurring in her work that interest me, like the nature of being an outsider, the choice to protect people you love, and the complex feelings of someone who has been made to feel invisibilized. I really enjoyed the setting—both the Outer Banks vacation house and the Tennessee ravine feel very vivid and integral to the book as settings. The audiobook in particular is stunning; the full cast helped keep the flashback chapters distinct and Allwine’s voicework here was a lot stronger than in The Last to Vanish.

I normally LOVE Megan Miranda (adult) books, but this one just fell flat for me. I called pretty much immediately what I assume the big twist was,
that her BF was the one blackmailing and stalking the group, and once they spoke about Claire enough times, the connection wasn't shocking. I found said BF/Russ' death very anticlimactic, I had to re-read it because it seemed so lack-luster.
I also felt like there were far too many characters and the story got cluttered far too quickly. This was interesting and worth checking out, but the weakest (adult) Miranda book I've read. I also wish we spent more time condemning
the teacher/student crush/almost relationship (at least the way they were acting like it was going to play).

Wasn't hooked right away. Probably took 70 or so pages into it to get invested in this group of characters. When you read the Past excerpts, you start to understand them a little better.
The thrill, mystery aspect was fun but it kind of fell flat for me by the end. Things just didn't make sense completely still, I have questions on motives and the chain of events...I guess I wanted more answers by the end and I didn't get the ones I wanted.
I did have fun reading this though and flew through the last few chapters.

tl;dr: I read this in one day, practically in one sitting

Okay, so, look, I'm by no means a thriller aficionado, so feel free to take all of this with a grain of salt. I'm very rarely going to guess the twist ahead of time, I'm pretty much always going to have a jaw dropping moment, and I'm generally going to fly through thrillers because of the way they're written.

ALL OF THAT BEING SAID, THOUGH - I really, really, really enjoyed this book. I loved how all of it came together, and I loved the narrative choice to go back and forth from the present to the accident (starting with one survivor's POV 7 hours afterwards and going back one hour and switching POVs until you got to the accident itself).

I was swept up in all the winding ways that everything came together, and it all seemed plausible. It is twisty, and fun, and sad, and I thought there was a very good twist at the end! I've also decided to go through Megan Miranda's backlist based on this book alone, so that's another point in this book's favor!
