4 1/2 stars. There are few authors for whom I will push aside other waiting books as soon as a new title is released, but Zoë Sharp earns that honor many times over. The action, twists, and pacing are masterful, and heroine Charlie Fox uniquely inspires both awe and empathy. It was even a happy bonus to discover the setting of this installment was post-Katrina New Orleans, as that has become an unintentional literary area of interest for me in the past year. True pleasure reading, with oodles of excitement. A thriller indeed.

I bloody love Charlie Fox! She's the thinking reader's Jack Reacher; more interior monologue and personal hygiene, less cliches and shagging.
This time she's in New Orleans where her protectee is attending a fundraiser for post-Katrina reconstruction. It soon becomes apparent that there's a genuine threat to someone in the group of rich potential benefactors - but which, and from whom?
This is definitely a series to read in order; at the very least you should read Fourth Day then Fifth Victim before picking up Die Easy if you want to understand Charlie's backstory and specifically her relationship with Sean.
Following his near-fatal shooting at the end of Fourth Day, Sean has significant memory loss and is quite a different person now. I really appreciated the portrayal of a traumatic brain injury in a realistic way. Too often, popular culture depicts miraculous recoveries with no lasting effects. In contrast, Charlie's learning that Sean has regressed four years and is very much a hostile ex-squaddie rather than the assure closed protection expert she could rely on personally and professionally. Could this be the end?

As action packed and entertaining as always I just HATE what is happening with Sean. Charlie has had so many awful, awful things happen to her that she deserves some happiness and she had that with Sean. I really loved the connection between Charlie & Sean and how well they worked together. It is bad enough that he doesn't remember their relationship but they could have worked back to that point but to have Sean change his fundamental character to break that connection made me enjoy this book less that previous instalments and turned a 4 star book into a 3 star for me.
