Ha! A book 'about friends and toys and trouble'. That is definitely true. In this case I appreciated the artwork much more than the story (I still remember how my baby sister took a permanent marker to the face of my favorite doll. - There is still sorrow there...). Maybe I should have read this book when I was 8.

Silly story about how to get a toy plane out of a tree by piling animals on top of each other. With okay art. Not a bad story, just not too much to it. The story is not all that original and I wouldn't have expected it as a Caldecott winner.

Opinion - I like this story and I like that mouse and rabbit work it out for the best.

Mouse tells a very simple story (not that it's lacking in action and drama) of his friendship with Rabbit. There are lessons to be learned from this story. Both mommy and three year old enjoyed it thoroughly.
PS. I first thought the book was a spin on the same characters as [b:Duck! Rabbit!|6124878|Duck! Rabbit!|Amy Krouse Rosenthal|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1356018230s/6124878.jpg|6303340] and almost put it back on the shelf without looking at it. Why? The white Rabbit, the blue cover, similar format. But there's no connection what so ever with that book.
Update: This definitely is a favorite. My son regularly asks to borrow "the book with the rabbit" again.
PPS. About the connection to Duck! Rabbit! Turns out it's not just me. So, yes, her Rabbit is definitely a spin on My Friend Rabbit (but not the other way around), although the similarities are only visual.

My Friend Rabbit is an animal story in which a mouse and a rabbit are best friends. Although Rabbit is well intentioned, âwhatever he does, wherever he goes, trouble follows;â nonetheless, mouse remains his friend and helps him work through the difficulties. Rohmannâs use of a limited color palette and heavily outlined cartoon style results in an air of simplicity that reflects a childâs view of the world and the nature of friendship. At the secondary level, My Friend Rabbit, could serve as an introduction to the special friendship between George and Lenny that is at the heart of John Steinbeckâs Of Mice and Men.
