The premise and story was interesting, some narrative diversions left me wanting / skimming to get back to the cold part of being in Antartica.

this book is crap.
antiquated language, characters left undeveloped, and unorganized story.

50 pages in, it was trending toward middle school social tensions. No thanks. No other hook to keep me.

Cooper Gosling, the main character of this South Pole Station adventure, is both a wounded bird and a total badass, and her sojourn at the South Pole, in the company of other Fingys (Pole-speak for "fucking new guys"), Beakers (scientists), and Nailheads (construction workers)—not to mention a ragtag bunch of medical, kitchen, sanitation, and other assorted support personnel—changes her in profound and unexpected ways. The villains in the narrative are a little too villainy for my taste, but Ashley Shelby writes with verve, skill, and a poker-faced humor, and the collection of "Polies" among whom Cooper finds herself are eccentric, damaged, infuriating, and profoundly lovable. And the chapters written from the point of view of each of the major characters provide a kaleidoscopic overview of this unforgettable, realer-than-real crew working at the unforgiving bottom of the world.

It didn’t draw me in. Writing was flat. And another book set in Antarctica (nonfiction) became available that was preferable.Â
