Well that was a bit crap, flat ending and then a weird epilogue. What a disappointment after the set up and peak of volume 3.

Well, that was not what I was expecting (or wanting for that matter!) and this last volume was a little bit more muddled than the previous 4. But, the story aside, the art was still great. I just did not expect that ending, and unfortunately, it sort of colors the whole rest of the series. Still, an amazing collection. I enjoyed almost all of it immensely.

This volume was definitely the strongest even though the ending felt a bit rushed. I liked that the conclusion is a compromise on dreams and happiness that I can imagine a lot of people can relate to. And emotional. Ampersand!

The whole series was enjoyable, the ending I didn't see coming. It was sad and traguc. But I likedhiw the whole series wrapped up.  Excellent story.  Well done for a graphic novel.

And so it ends. I was wondering how they would wrap this story up in just two more volumes when I started reading this, but I think Vaughan did a very, very good job. Even though he had to rely on the
Spoilertimejump at the end
, I think it was the right move and very satisfying. But satisfying or not, christ what a tragedy :( I cried twice. Alright I'm just gonna spoiler tag this whole section because I don't feel like being careful.
SpoilerI was so shocked to learn that Dr. Mann's father was alive! And had successfully cloned Allison multiple times already. His theory on the plague, that he was the cause of it, is I think just a theory/ And can be added to the other theories that other characters have had in this series. I think BKV left it up in the air as to what actually caused the plague. And finally.. at long last.. Agent 355 and Yorick confess their love for each other. Only to have her taken so cruelly from him :( I wanted to see Alter burn. The culmination of all that tension between the two of them to end in a tragedy like that. So upsetting. And the scarf! God it was all just so well done. WHY did he have to kill her, ugh. Alter can seriously fuck off, I appreciate what Yorick did but I wish he would have blown her brains out. All because she didn't want to be killed by a woman. I mean come on, fuck yourself. The time jump was really spectacular, seeing Yorick as this clever old man was cool, and also seeing the progression of Society over those sixty years, and of the clones. The very last panel was just perfect. "He jumped?!" "No. He escaped." Man did I have chills. And the little flashback with 355 and he almost moved me to tears again. The flashback of Ampersands death was extremely emotional too. And just so well done I can't stress it enough.
So there it is, a long, rambling review of the end of a series that I enjoyed it immensely. It's emotional, it's hilarious, it's badass, it's just so damn good. Well done Vaughan.

I have loved every other Brian Vaughan series I've read, so it's pretty disappointing that these just don't measure up to his other work. I just don't buy that a group of militant women want to destroy all memory of men, and are willing to go to any lengths to do so. Also, he still can't get through one of these books without using the word 'retard.' Did he lose some horrible, horrible bet? We still have supermodels lugging dead bodies in midriff tank tops and we learn more about where the supposed plague originated (very unsatisfying). I was also disappointed to find out the whole reason that the Israeli military woman was tracking Yorrick down was that she wanted him to kill her...because being killed by a woman wasn't 'macho' enough of a death. AND Vaughan kills off one of the more interesting characters. UGH!

Vaughan jumps the storyline 60 yrs into the future so we can see how mankind is getting along. There, Yorrick has gone a bit insane..so how do they deal with him? Oh, right. They lock the *escape artist* up in a room, in a straight jacket. *sigh*

Spoiler
, we find that there is actually another man still alive (but he, too, thinks all men should die...*really*?!!), Yorrick finally finds Beth- who sleeps with him then breaks up with him, and 355 is killed off

What a great ending! My week is complete. I highly recommend this entire series.
