Although BAD PARTS is marketed as a "Supernatural Thriller", it definitely toes the line between thriller and horror. With thrills, twists and a good smattering of gore, this book is sure to please fans of both genres!
The story follows Ash (aka Ashlee) the bad-ass lead guitarist and manager for the rock band "Bad Parts." After a chance encounter with a back alley thug, she is forced to return home after a decade to seek out the help of Snare, the town's local creek demon, in hopes of "trading" her broken hand for a brand new one. The catch? Snare has her own agenda that will threaten to tear the small town apart.
I know I say this quite frequently, but I swear I could NOT put this one down! It completely sucked me in and wouldn't let me go (pun completely intended if you've read it.) I couldn't for the life of me figure out where this book was going and all of the twists completely took me by surprise! My only issue (and why it's not a 5 star read for me) is because I felt the build up to the finale took a little bit longer than I would have liked. However, I have to say that I fully enjoyed the ride and can't wait to find out where the author takes these characters in the follow up novel!
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for my ARC. BAD PARTS is out June 23!

I could not stand the characters in this book. There were veeeeery few redeemable qualities in any of them. The premise of the book was so promising which made it all the more disappointing. I dreaded listening to it, because I would get so mad at everyone's actions. I can't imagine what a series would look like, although many of the characters were killed off(probably the only one I liked), so maybe that's a good thing. Thanks to NetGalley for providing the ARC Audiobook in exchange for my review.
Bad Parts is just the kind of creepy story that works well for the Halloween season. It's a bit too far into cheesy territory but just the idea of the traders is chilling. Despite that, I had a few problems with this one. Parts of the story are drawn out while other parts move at a fast pace with lots of action, and the bounce back and forth is rather jarring. This story is loaded with possibilities, but it kind of feels like the author didn't know how he wanted it to go so he threw everything at us. Then we have a whole cast of characters who seem to be incapable of making a good decision. Seriously, not a single one is the type of character I'd want to root for. There is a turnaround for a couple of them late in the book, but it's too little, too late, especially after everything that has to happen for them to get to that point. It all comes together to make for a story that is convoluted and busier than it needed to be. Sometimes, less is more, and this book could've used a bit of that for a more effective story. Finally, there's the narrator, Ellie Gossage. Her voice works well for audio, and she does inject a good amount of excitement into the dialogue. It's the rest of the story that falls short because everything that wasn't dialogue sounded like a news reporter, reporting a story. It had that same tone and felt distanced from the story. In the end, Bad Parts was an okay story with promise, but the whole of it fell way short of the mark.
I was so excited for this book. I loved the premise, a demon in a stream that would replace damaged body parts. A young guitarist in a metal band needs to replace a damaged part. The book even starts at a battle of the bands show with crowd surfing, moshing in the pit and Getting crushed against the stage. Perfection.
Sometimes a book is written in a way that you absolutely lose yourself in the story. Your world disappears and you seem to be following the characters like you are a spirit floating over their shoulder. You care for and even love those characters.
Bad Parts is the complete opposite of those books. Every word seemed forced or chosen to try to make maximum impact like this was a freshman creative writing class. I strongly disliked every single character in this book. They all made stupid choices that did not make any sense or seemed to go against the personality they previously displayed.

I basically decided to try this audiobook on a whim as I was browsing the 'Listen Now' catalog on Netgalley for something to listen to while painting. I know that I don't often read supernatural thrillers, but I can really enjoy the genre if I know what I signed up for from the beginning (I only dislike the supernatural element when it comes as a surprise)... The blurb of Bad Parts also sounded particularly enticing with the music element and the creek demon. I was hoping for something entertaining to distract me from the daunting painting task, and I can now say that this audiobook definitely delivered just that.
As you might already know, I’m still pretty new with the whole audiobook experience... But I'm quickly becoming a fan. This audiobook is narrated by Ellie Gossage, and I think she did an excellent job giving both main character Ash Hudson and the other characters in play a voice. The fact that she changed her voice slightly whenever other characters are speaking made it a lot easier to keep them apart. The pace and flow of the story seemed solid, and I had no struggles keeping track of the story and plot developments. All in all the audio version makes for an enjoyable way to experience Bad Parts.
As for the story itself... There is no doubt that the premise of Bad Parts is fascinating, and if you like supernatural thrillers you will be in for a treat with the creek demon Snare. I liked how this element was developed into the story, with the 'bad part' trading and developments in the plot. The title doesn't just reference to the trading though, as main character Ash Hudson is in a band with the same name. Music definitely plays a role in this story, and I liked the music references and overall vibe.
I do have to say that I found this story to be a tad too dragged out. I felt that the story could have been told in less pages and as a result the pace did slow down. I had that feeling about halfway down the audiobook that the story was about to finish, and I found myself to be quite surprised there was so much more story left... Overall it was still entertaining, but I think I would have liked less 'clutter' and more focus on the plot developments and supernatural vibe. I also wasn't able to connect all that well to the cast of characters; they are not exactly likeable and I found some of their actions and decisions to be rather unbelievable. I'm not sure what to make of that ending either...
In short, if you are looking for an entertaining supernatural thriller and don't mind unlikeable characters, a tad overlong plot and certain aspects not being credible, Bad Parts could be a great match.

I loved this fast paced, gripping and entertaining book.
It's well written, the world building interesting, the characters fleshed out and the plot kept me hooked.
i can't wait to read another book by this author.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

This was probably one of the most original stories I've read this year.
When rock guitarist Ashley (Ash) Hudson, damages her hand irreparably before a big show, she immediately seeks out the help of her hometown's creek demon, Snare. Snare has been known to trade people's "bad parts" for new ones - need a new body part? No problem! Snare will take your busted limb and replace it with a brand new one! There is (of course) a catch - 1) only one body part is available at a time; and 2) you can't leave town with Snare's parts or they'll disappear.
As a rock star who is constantly on tour, this deal just won't cut it for Ash. How can she perform at her upcoming show if she can't leave town? So Ash strikes a new deal with the demon and promises to do whatever it wants in exchange for a permanent hand and the freedom to leave town.
I thought this book was a lot of fun to read. It's a wild and thrilling ride, with a few gory details thrown in (it is, after all, a book about trading body parts).
I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more character development in the next book so I'm definitely looking forward to reading the second book when it comes out.

Holy cow, the intensity on this is through the roof!
I thought the idea that you could trade your bad body parts for new ones intriguing, and I had a feeling Ash wouldn’t like the restrictions that come with the trade. The thing I loved about this one is that there were quite a few characters that had a stake in what was going on. They all had traded something or needed something from Snare.
Once things started going downhill for Ash, it only got worse. It's all incredibly tense. You lose hope, then gain it multiple times. The storyline is super fun, and Ash is a great main character. I love her strength, and that she won’t take no for an answer. And to think this is book 1 in a series! I can’t even imagine where book 2 will lead us, but I can’t wait to find out. Nicely done.

What would you do if you thought your dream was dead? What would you pay to have your dream back? Thats what Ash and her family have to decide. In a town where a being, demon or something lives in the creek that will replace broken or bad body parts life is pretty good, or is it? There is a catch, if you have one of these body parts you need to stay within 10 miles of the town or your body part disappears. Since Ash is a musician and her life depends on her traveling she tries to make a deal with the demon. If she can collect a bunch of broken parts the demon will give her her hand and allow her and all the others to leave the town. Sounds good right? Well convincing the towns people isn't so easy.
I'm really torn about this book, the concept is different, the narration was excellent but the lengths people will go to save themselves is something interesting. I think I liked it? I know I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. I think horror fans and people who like books with no easy fix will like it.
